Vanuatu Cricket Association [VCA] is very proud to host the world cup EAP 2019, the biggest women’s sports event that Vanuatu has ever hosted in Port Vila.
The world cup qualifier began on Monday this week and will continue till Friday.
Daily sports was fortunate to speak with the EAP(East Asia Pacific) Development Manager, Jane Livesey yesterday morning and she was quoted saying, “we got 6 teams in this competition, and each play each other, and then the team that’s on the point table at the end, will be the winner, and they’ll go through to the next stage of qualifying round for the world cup.”
Livesey also added that the winner of this competition will go to another qualifying stage in Scotland in September this year and from there the winner will then go to another qualifying stage next year that has not yet confirmed, and from there the winner will automatically go to the ICC women’s World Cup 2020 next year in Australia.
The 6 participating countries that are currently here in Port Vila for that EAP Qualifiers 2019 are Fiji, PNG, Samoa, Indonesia, Japan and Vanuatu.
Daily sport also spoke with Holly Ferling, Australian Cricketer, and she said that this is her first time here in Vanuatu which is only 2 hours flight from Brisbane to Port Vila. She is really excited. Ferling described the Team Vanuatu players as role models. Ferling said that, “there are some really talented girls here from the Vanuatu and across the Pacific nations, there’s some really good bowler’s, and on Monday saw the Papua New Guinean team displaying their strength as a power house of cricket in the region.
Ferling also added that, she was surprised that everyone not only had skills but the playing tactics too.
Ferling also pointed out that, “professionalism in sports is being able to not to only do what you do best, but also to apply that to each team that you play.
But Vanuatu has a number of really good players that am really excited about, like Rachel and Selina team Captain, have actually send over to Australia and played against number of my team mates, that kind of relationship that our country is having is really helping to lift the standards of cricket, and they come back and lift the standards of cricket in Vanuatu.”
Holly Ferling is an Australian Cricket (bowler) player, and she is playing for the Australian National women’s cricket team, she has been represented her country in 3 world cups and played in few series, but never been to Vanuatu and never been to an EAP(East Asia Pacific) competition.
Livesey acknowledge the Australian government for supporting Holly’s visit to come over to help promote the game, and also Australian government in partnership with Pacific islands sports which is a development programme, and also to have Holly as a role model for the girls during the competition which they can reflect on so later they can be role models themselves to their communities and families.
‘And it’s really important to promote women’s cricket.’
