VASANOC and Women In Sport to host Olympic Day

Every day, members of the Olympic Movement work to build a better world through sport.

On 22nd June 2019, that effort will be bigger through Olympic Day. Olympic Day is an annual, global celebration that sees millions of people – of all ages and from all walks of life – participate in events across the globe to raise awareness of the vital role that sport and physical activity play in society with Vanuatu being no different.

As 2019 marks the 71st anniversary of Olympic Day, this year VASANOC will be celebrating through Vanuatu Women In Sport, who will be the hosts of the event in advocating to have more women in sports in Vanuatu as well as the social and physical benefits of living a healthier lifestyle by playing sport.

VASANOC and Vanuatu Women In Sports will begin school visits next week to engage and promote how sport changes lives and the benefits that playing sport can have. Physical activity for instance is proven to provide numerous important health benefits and prevent non-communicable diseases such as heart attacks, diabetes and obesity.

In Vanuatu Olympic Day is an occasion for us and the National Sporting Federations to promote the important role of sport and physical activity in society, in particular its potential as an effective tool for youth development and ensuring people lead healthier and active lives.

Jamal Vira, VASANOC Media, stated “The Olympic Movement plays a huge role in opening the door to peace, and how sport can build bridges and bring people together. This always seems to be the case no matter where you are and no matter where you’re from, that is, if you play a sport there is always just that connection”

“The school visit program is something that has worked wonders. We are now able to share what Olympic day means to youth more readily and how sport can help the them both from a health and social perspective, as well as see people smile and have fun off course”

Vira highlighted that It is also an occasion to highlight community-based sport and recreation programmes, which encourage participation in sport across the globe, regardless of age, background or abilities.

This year’s Olympic Day is on the 22nd of June and Vanuatu will be celebrating it in true Pacific style by the lagoon at Holiday Inn with a whole set of activities based around the Olympic Day Pillars “Move, Learn & Discover”.
