VASANOC: Athletes must qualify on merit for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

VASANOC has re-affirmed its stand that NFs that want to be included in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, have to start doing their best to participate in qualifying events to qualify Athlete’s on merit for these Games.

This means cooperating with their respective regional and international federations and also with VASANOC, the National Olympic Committee of Vanuatu.

The 33 sports in Tokyo2020 are: Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby Union 7s, Sailing, Shooting, Skateboarding, SportClimbing, Surfing, Table-Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball/BeachVolleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Vanuatu has NFs for 19 of the 33 sports listed above.

VASANOC CEO, Henry Tavoa pointed out that, “Qualification on merit is the top criteria for sports that want to be included in Team Vanuatu for Tokyo Olympics. The next criteria is for Athletes’ who are invited through the IOC’s Tripartite System. Athletes’ who are Wild Cards will be the final criteria for these Olympics”.

Tavoa said, “Since our first participation in Olympics in 1988 until the 2008 Games, most of our Athletes have been Wild Cards with exception of the Sydney Games in 2000. In Rio Olympics, Team Vanuatu included for the first time, only athletes that qualified Athletes on merit and through the Tripartite System”.

Tavoa concluded that, “We hope this stand will encourage NFs to do their best to qualify Athlete’s on merit for the Olympics. We have already done that for the 2000, the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and we can do so again for Tokyo2020”.
