Treating injuries and taking proper nutrition are the main components of sport and this is why Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee(VASANOC) hosted a week long First Aid basic level three and Nutrition courses for national coaches and development officers who are part of the training.
Speaking to the Daily Post yesterday VASANOC Sports Development officer James Kalo Malau confirmed this is the first time for Vanuatu sports to have a First Aid course and Nutrition is is funded by VASANOC.
"The idea came about after the 2019 Pacific Games and 2017 Pacific Mini Games, what we have observed is that most of our coaches are qualified in the Sports area but not in other areas where they help our athletes prepare holistically they lack some areas which can assist them.
"The two main areas are sports injuries and nutrition in sports," Malau said.
"VASANOC we decided that the remaining month of this year and next year we will be up-skilling our coaches in these areas.
"That's why we are putting this plan. Educate our coaches how to manage an injury, help athletes to manage those injuries that can minimise injuries in most cases when injuries happen on the field, they run in with deep heat and water which is not a proper procedure to take.
" This course will teach participants the right way to manage that injury. See how they are treated," he added.
The eight hours course started on Monday and finishes tonight.
Nutrition
At the most basic level, nutrition is important for athletes because it provides a source of energy required to perform the activity.
Coaches are educated on the right food to give to their athletes during preparation for competition.
